Building Your Magazine into a Brand
In today's publishing industry, magazine publishers no longer produce and market a single product. They've learned their readers come to expect a package of products and services accompanied with their magazine(s), thus turning their single product into a brand and creating an emotional relationship with your readership, based on differentiation, relevance, knowledge and esteem. The fundamental point of building a brand is consumer promises that differ from the competition and go beyond the main functionality that your magazine offers.

Differentiate: Be different. The fact is, with so many options available, what's going to get your magazine noticed? Do you want to run with the pack or stand out from the pack? If you chose the latter, then you're one step closer to building a brand. First things first though, who are you?, What do you do? and why does it matter? Unless your answers to those three questions are compelling, you need to rethink your magazines editorial vision.

Relevance: Strategic thinking is a very big part of building a brand, but more importantly is the execution. The creative thinking behind brands is what makes them stick in readers minds and sticking is what makes your brand relevant. Relevance in the minds of your readers is what builds trust and will allow you to produce a wide range of products and services that will immediately captivate your readers.

Knowledge: Research, research and continuing research is how you build a knowledge base that you can use to get inside your readers head. Acquiring your readers dialect, musical preference, taste palette, social patterns, revenue structure, and spending habits is useful information that you need to know in order to sustain your magazine for many years to come.

Esteem: Once you've set your magazine apart from the competition, established it's relevance and learned how you reader thinks, you will gain the respect and admiration from your reader that will turn into a real relationship, one where your reader will love your magazine for what it is and also what it grows into in the future, giving you a lifetime reader whom will pass the relationship down through generations.

But before you decide to brand your magazine be prepared for new challenges that accompany a brand, such as competition from other media outlets and learning new businesses as your magazine will manifest into multiple products and streams of income. Get help from professionals to guide you through the process and quite frankly do the hard work for you.
